Antioxidants and age-related blindness

The Facts:

· Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition causing permanent blindness in older people.

· Researchers studied if higher levels of anti-oxidants in the diet of people aged over 55 reduced the risk of them developing AMD.

· Results showed those with a higher intake of beta-carotene and vitamin E both had a lower risk of AMD.

Shaun's comment: In general terms, bigger research studies give better answers than smaller ones and with data collected from around 5,000 participants, this was an enormous study. Around 10% of people who are 66 to 74 years old will have AMD and this rises to around 30% of those who are 75 to 85 years old. We all know that antioxidants are good for you, but this is the first major study to demonstrate that antioxidants can reduce the risk of eye problems that can occur with old age.
