I read about a case today that was settled in favor of a family who lost their father when he eloped from an assisted living facility and fell into a drainage ditch, and died.
It is every family's worst nightmare and yet it happens annually in Virginia.
Loved ones with dementia, Alzheimer's, short term memory loss are placed in secured facilities for their health and safety. Then, someone is not paying attention, doors are not locked, alarms are not in place, and those loved ones are found outside, having fallen, bloody, injured and sometimes dead.
We have handled numerous elopement cases and continue to assist families who are faced with this same situation: Dad and Mom, known elopement risks, are not watched or monitored, and injury results.
If you are looking for a Virginia law firm to analyze your family's elopement case from a Virginia nursing home or assisted living facility, feel free to contact our office and ask for Lauren - toll free at 1-866-985-0098.
Such a heartbreaking event shouldn't continue to happen....

HOW TO CHOSE A NURSING HOME IN VIRGINIA
This is such a scary topic for families.
No one wants to say "Mom, you need health care I cannot provide at home... lets discuss our options."
Despite the unpleasantness of the conversation, it is a must for millions of Americans.
And when is a good time to discuss long term care options?
I love quizzes, so here is a quiz:
1. When a hospital says you need to go to a nursing home for rehab
2. When a fall takes place at home and the loved one is no longer able to live alone
3. When the person is healthy and independent but facing an age of uncertainty
4. Right now, when your loved ones start to discuss retirement.
ANSWER: 4, but 3 will do.
1 & 2 are just too late.
Dan and I will be out of business if everyone takes our advice. No really. We will have to find new work.
We hope that our advice on how to chose a nursing home in Virginia will help one or two families today, and then they won't have to call us in a few weeks.
So here is some basic info for the day: How to select a Virginia Nursing Home.
I wish you all the best with this difficult topic and most stressful time.
