The Facts:
* Almost 80 patients with type 2 diabetes took part in a study to investigate the effects of cinnamon on this condition.
* After 4 months, blood glucose levels had fallen 3 times more in patients taking cinnamon than in those taking a placebo.
* People with the highest blood glucose levels at the start of the study showed the greatest decreases in blood glucose.
Shaun’s comment: Cinnamon trees are native to Sri Lanka and Southern India and the bark has been used for centuries as a spice. It is thought to be helpful for preventing colds and for bowel problems. This was a well-designed study with some very positive results. Given the huge increases we are seeing in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes any new treatments are welcome. However, you may need to take a supplement – the sprinkling on the top of your cappuccino probably isn’t enough!
