The Facts:
* Patients with heart disease took part in a study to see if taking oral L-arginine improved their ability to perform a 30-minute exercise test.
* After 6 weeks of treatment with L-arginine, patients had a decreased heart rate following exercise and blood tests showed that they coped better with exercise compared with patients who had taken a dummy drug.
* Taking L-arginine might be useful in improving fitness in patients with heart disease.
Shaun’s comment: It has been known for many years that L-arginine has important roles in the body, including roles in wound healing and cell division. On the negative side, a recent study showed that it was not good for people who were recovering from a heart attack and may even have led to more subsequent deaths. The results from this study show improvements in exercise tolerance in people with mild heart failure and so there could be a potential role for people with this condition, but not for those who have suffered a heart attack.
