Low-Fat Diet Linked to Improved Mood CME

Obese or overweight patients lose about the same amount of weight after a year whether they follow a low-carbohydrate (LC) or low-fat (LF) diet, but those following the LF diet had greater improvement on measures of mood, a new study has found.

"Even though the low-carb group lost the same amount of weight as the low-fat group, their mood didn't improve to the same extent that we saw with the high-carb/low-fat diet," said the study's lead author, Grant D. Brinkworth, PhD, of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation–Food and Nutritional Sciences, Adelaide, Australia.


The study included 118 participants aged 24 to 64 years with abdominal obesity and at least 1 additional metabolic syndrome risk factor. Participants were randomized to either an LC diet or an LF diet for 52 weeks.
