Evidence for...Magnesium for heart disease prevention

Magnesium supplementation helps to improve carotid intima media thickness in patients on hemodialysis.
Turgut F et al.
Int Urol Nephrol. 2008 Jun 21. [Epub ahead of print]
In haemodialysis patients, magnesium supplementation (magnesium citrate orally at a dosage of 610 mg every other day for 2 months) significantly improved bilateral carotid intima media thickness. These findings indicate that magnesium may play an important protective role in the progression of atherosclerosis in patients on dialysis.

Use of intravenous magnesium to treat acute onset atrial fibrillation: a meta-analysis.
Ho KM et al.
Heart. 2007;93:1433-40.
This meta-analysis of 10 randomised controlled trials concluded that adding intravenous magenesium to digoxin reduces fast ventricular response in acute onset atrial fibrillation.

Oral magnesium therapy, exercise heart rate, exercise tolerance, and myocardial function in coronary artery disease patients.
Pokan R et al.
Br J Sports Med. 2006;40:773-8.
Oral magnesium 15 mmol twice daily had favourable effects on exercise tolerance and left ventricular function during rest and exercise in patients with stable coronary artery disease.
