Calcium for pregnant women

The Facts:

* This study was a huge World Health Organisation study of over 8,000 women.

* Women with low calcium diets took either calcium supplements or placebo.

* Calcium reduced several complications of pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, severe gestational hypertension, severe maternal morbidity, preterm delivery and neonatal death.

Shaun’s comment: Calcium is necessary for healthy bones and teeth. In this study, the women in the treatment group took 1.5g of calcium each day from before the 20th week until the end of the pregnancy. This study confirms pregnant women need calcium for a healthy pregnancy. This is usually obtained from dairy products and other foods in a healthy diet. However, if you are concerned that your diet may be lacking in calcium, then it would be advisable to take a supplement during pregnancy.
