The role of herbal medicines in treating back pain

The Facts:
* A recent review of good-quality, short term research showed Devil’s claw and White Willow Bark were better at reducing back pain than placebo (a dummy drug).
* Cayenne also showed promising results compared to placebo and a homeopathic gel.
* Results from these studies only show the effect after 6 weeks of treatment; the long-term effectiveness and safety of these preparations is not known.

Shaun’s comment: Around 50% of working adults have back pain every year and there are no certain ways of making it go away. This review has looked at all the well conducted trials that have been undertaken that have assessed herbal medicines as a treatment for back pain. Although the authors of the research say that additional testing is needed, the evidence to date suggests that Devil's Claw, White Willow Bark and Cayenne were effective. If you have a bad back and want to try a herbal medicine, these would be the ones to try.
