Herbal medicines can relieve symptoms of menopause

The Facts:

* 300 women with menopausal symptoms (including depression) took a combination of herbal preparations or a placebo (dummy drug) for 4 months.

* Women in both groups reported an improvement in their symptoms although the effect was far more noticeable in the group taking the herbal medicines.

* Black cohosh and St. John’s wort relieve the symptoms of menopause.

Shaun’s comment: Black cohosh (also called Black bugbane or Black snakeroot) is a North American perennial which can grow up to 2.5 metres tall. It is thought to help premenstrual tension (PMT) and gynecological complaints by acting on oestrogen and other chemical receptors. The beneficial properties of St. John’s wort for depression are well known. This large study from Germany found that both of these plant extracts helped with symptoms of menopause.
