Evidence for... Pycnogenol for diabetes

Improvement of diabetic microangiopathy with pycnogenol: A prospective,
controlled study.

30 patients with severe diabetic microangiopathy received oral pycnogenol (50 mg capsules, 3 times daily for a total of 150 mg/day) for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, microangiopathy levels had improved, capillary filtration had significantly decreased, and the venoarteriolar response had significantly improved. Treatment was well tolerated.

In diabetic patients with severe microangiopathy causing leg ulcerations, 6 weeks' combined oral and local pycnogenol treatment completely healed 89% of patients and improved microcirculation. No side effects were reported.

Supplementation with pycnogenol 100 mg for 12 weeks, in addition to conventional antidiabetic treatment, significantly lowered plasma glucose levels as compared to placebo, in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
